Naturalist & Tropical Garden Designer

Randall Quirk

Designing private tropical gardens in South and Central Florida that take your breath away.

Most gardens in Florida look like every other garden in Florida, but you deserve a garden that takes your breath away.

You want to walk out your door and feel something, not just see a generic yard.

You deserve to have a garden that is that layered, alive, composed the way the rainforest composes itself. The kind of garden your guests can marvel at, and the kind of garden that makes you feel like you've traveled to an exotic location by stepping through your door.

Randall Quirk has spent fifty years across 87 countries learning how to design one for you.

The Difference

Most landscape designers select plants from a catalog. Randall has stood next to most of his plants in the wild.

Working with him is not the same as hiring a licensed landscape architect or a large landscaping company, because his knowledge of ecosystems and natural context goes much deeper.

He does not do volume. He does not subcontract design. He selects every specimen himself, often visiting multiple greenhouses to find the one that belongs.

The Process

Generally, Randall begins by walking the property to read its light zones and to listen to what you want. Are there fruiting trees you love? Palms you've always admired? Colors that pull you in? Are there plants from places you've traveled that you want to live with?

From there, he prepares a plan, scaled to the property, that maps every specimen. After it is approved, Randall personally visits growers and greenhouses to select each plant. Installation is staged, often over multiple visits. After installation, he returns to make sure the garden is settling well, and to teach you how to care for it.

The Investment

A Randall Quirk garden is a serious investment, and the reasons are honest ones: rare specimens, the time it takes to find them, the decades of fieldwork that inform every placement, and the labor of installing a tropical garden in South Florida well rather than quickly.

A meaningful project typically begins around $25,000 for plant material and installation, with design fees starting at $4,500.

Smaller and larger projects are both possible. The right starting point is a conversation.

Get to Know Randall Quirk

For nearly five decades, Randall has studied tropical ecosystems across 87 countries, from the Amazon Basin to the rainforests of Madagascar, the high-altitude gardens of Kinabalu to the seasonal floodplains of the Pantanal.

He brings that fieldwork home to South Florida, where he designs private tropical gardens for clients who want something irreplaceable.

Randall currently serves as Garden Director at the Patch of Heaven Sanctuary in Homestead, Florida. He works with a small number of private clients each year.

Randall is not the right designer for projects looking for the lowest bid, the fastest turnaround, or a generic landscape refresh.

If your priority is volume pricing, large-scale commercial work, or a quick yard makeover, a landscape contractor will serve you better, and Randall is glad to point you toward one.

A Randall Quirk garden is right for you if you appreciate the difference between a yard and a garden.

You have traveled, or wish to. You are drawn to places that feel composed, layered, and alive, and you have a property that deserves the same.

You value the work of someone who has spent decades doing one thing very well, and you want a voice in the design rather than handing it off entirely.
